Why We Love a Being a Zero Waste Textiles Facility

At Highfield Knitting Company, we are committed to reducing our impact both socially and environmentally. One of the ways that we do this is we divert our textile waste (off cuts) to furniture fill. We then donate or auction off the furniture and give all of the proceeds to charity. We only cover the cost of materials (which is low  because we provide the fill).

The textile industry is a major contributor to global waste, producing approximately 92 million tons of waste each year. This includes waste generated during production, as well as post-consumer waste from discarded clothing and textiles. That's why diverting textile factory waste is crucial to reduce the negative impact on the environment.

Here are some reasons why diverting textile factory waste is so important:

  1. Reducing Landfill Waste: Diverting textile factory waste reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. Textile waste can take years to decompose, and it can release harmful chemicals and greenhouse gases into the environment. By diverting this waste, we can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and promote a more sustainable future.

  2. Conservation of Resources: Textile waste also represents a loss of valuable resources, including water, energy, and materials. By diverting waste, we can conserve these resources and reduce the environmental impact of textile production.

  3. Supporting Sustainable Practices: Diverting textile waste is an essential component of sustainable practices in the textile industry. It promotes the reuse and recycling of materials, reduces the negative impact on the environment, and supports sustainable production methods.

  4. Generating Revenue: Diverting textile waste can also be financially beneficial. The waste can be recycled or repurposed, creating new products and generating revenue. This can provide economic opportunities for local communities and promote a circular economy. In our case this is the bean bag chairs that we make! However, we choose not to profit from this venture and instead to donate these to other social good groups or auction them for proceed that go directly to local charities, so that we can further our social good impact and initiatives.

  5. Protecting the Environment: By diverting textile waste, we can reduce the impact on the environment and protect natural resources. It promotes responsible production and consumption, which is essential for a sustainable future.

In conclusion, diverting textile factory waste is important to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, conserve resources, support sustainable practices, generate revenue, and protect the environment. By promoting responsible production and consumption, we can create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
